Proposals for marking escape routes in coal mines

Abstract: The chapter presents the sources of fire danger in the mines and the requirements of mining regulations regarding to the escape routes in mines. Present state of escape route markings is represented. The main part of the article is to provide proposed by the authors ways of marking escape routes. The authors propose the application of reflective signs and so-called " life safety rope". The life safety rope consist of suspension cable and fasten markers. Life safety rope simplify crossing by escape routes, even in conditions of total lack of visibility. The study demonstrates that the average transition speed in conditions of total lack of visibility, is about 39 m/min, it is even slightly higher than the average speed in terms of smoky average, used to calculate times of transition the escape routes.

Economic and environmental benefits resulting from the changes of standards for the values of heat transfer coefficients in buildings

Abstract: Final energy consumption in the residential sector in Poland in relation to final energy consumption in all sectors of the economy stands at about 30%. The thermal insulation of building walls, constructed in order to reduce the energy demand of buildings for heating is economically justified. Hence the amendment of legislation in reducing the heat transfer coefficient of various elements of the building is most desired. The paper examined the economic and environmental benefits arising from changes in the value of heat transfer coefficient in the legislation. Normative values of this coefficient to be implemented in 2017 are justified economically and ecologically in Polish conditions. The payback periods of economic costs related to larger thicknesses of thermal insulation (from the requirements for 2014 to the requirements since 2017) emerge within 2-8 years, and environmental costs in the range of 1-5 years, depending on the heat source used in the building.

Capabilities and limitations of decreasing mercury load in polish bituminous coal in the production process

Abstract: Mercury is one of the most toxic elements contained in bituminous coal. Poland is considered to be the biggest Hg emitter of European Union because of significant carbonization of its economy. It is possible to greatly decrease the mercury load in the production processes of hard coal. Poland’s problem is the large share of raw coals use in power engineering. The Hg content in raw coal remains unchanged. Increasing the range of coal enrichment in polish collieries is feasible but difficult because of current market situation. The reduction of Hg content in bituminous coal could be possible by addition of product of larger granulation to average the fuel quality. However these coals are traditionally used for household heating.

Selection and preparation of candidates to the role of a quality auditor – a critical analysis

Abstract: The author of this article discussed the issues of selection and preparation of the candidates to the role of a quality auditor which appear to be important factors influencing the process itself as well as the results of an audit process. He also developed his own procedure in this respect which is divided into 10 stages. There is a clear division of activities that are related to the preparation of the auditor and those which are related to the preparation of the lead auditor. At each stage the actions which are necessary to secure a proper conduct of this preparation were presented. The whole procedure was thoroughly analysed. The author also paid attention to possible threats appearing in various stages of the procedure as well as he presented common mistakes made by organizations. In conclusion, he said that the selection as well as proper preparation of candidates to the role of a quality auditor has a significant impact on the effects of their work. Therefore, an organization and especially the person managing the audit process should take the responsibility for taking actions and the effects resulting from these actions.

Keizen system implementation in an automotive company – case study

Abstract: In the 21st century one cannot avoid combining the modern model of production management with the philosophy of continuous improvement. This is particularly visible in the automotive branch. The automotive market is characterized by very high dynamics, constantly increasing requirements from customers as well as requirements resulting from the changing (stricter) legal regulations: fumes emission standard, safety level, restrictions in the use of various kinds of materials etc. To meet the demands and ensure their enterprises’ competitiveness on the market, producers are introducing modern, proven methods of management and organisation. They willingly base their activity on Lean Management principles. The major tools (co-dependent and mutually supportive) of this method include: VSM, 5S, TPM, SMED. However, transferring Japanese management systems into European conditions alone does not guarantee success. This results from the fact that Far Eastern concepts originate from the culture-bound Keizen philosophy, which is based on team work. The major pillar of the Keizen philosophy is engagement of all the employees in the improvement process, which contradicts lower-level employees’ individualism, so deeply rooted in Western culture. The strength of Keizen lies in the fact that while using the existing tools, the developed technology as well as the knowledge and experience of employees, it does not require high expenditures, changing an enterprise on a step-by-step basis. This gives a considerable advantage over the Western approach, mainly based on innovative, expensive activities, which require the engagement of specialists and lead to big, rapid changes. In the article a manner of implementing in an automotive company have been presented.

The perspectives of post mining terrains reclamation in the city of Bohumin – case study

Abstract: The process of land reclamation reaches many industrial wasteland. However, the surface of post-mining land requires a lot of activities and budgets to level any remaining of the old infrastructure located in this area. The Upper Silesia region, covering both areas on the Polish and Czech side, is known to be principal region, where the underground coal mining process is running. As a result of mining activities, land-mine and area lying near to the mine begin to transform. Therefore landscape area is changing and there are various kinds of destruction of land, residential buildings and roads. The actions related to the restoration of the utility value of degraded areas should consistently carried out, looking primarily from the inhabitants of surrounding area point of view. The excavated area of reclamation and its proper management, in the future can bring huge benefits for the city and its inhabitants.

Application of GIS systems for delimitation of degraded areas of small cities and rural areas

Abstract: The paper presents the results of research on application of GIS systems for delimitation of degraded areas in smaller municipalities. During the analyses it was found out, that the distribution of population of smaller municipalities is uneven as most of the areas are covered by forests or cornfield. This increases population on smaller housing areas. From the point of view of socio-economic indicators related to the unit of area of the land, it interferes the measurements. On the other hand, due to lower number of inhabitants comparing to larger cities, taking some of the indicators that are standardised to „per 100 persons” as they are, may also interfere the results and distort the real situation. This paper is an attempt to handle these dilemmas.

The use of Kano model for the classification of the elements of product quality

Abstract: The article presents a case study of the use of the Noriaki Kano model, which allows the identification of the characteristics of the perfect product from the perspective of a potential customer. One of the basic assumptions of the Kano model is the variability of customer requirements, which with the passage of time and copying attributes of a product by competing companies, so-called "stunning" factors become common and become expected attributes, then the desired factors, and in the final phase the discouraging factors. The studies of features, of the perfect product were carried out in the company of processing meat and vegetable. Spatial surrogate for air emissions from small residential combustion – analysis using scarce top-down estimates

Abstract: This paper presents methodology for obtaining 'first step' spatial surrogate for disaggregation of air pollutants' emissions determined using top-down approach. Considered sector was small residential combustion due to its importance in emission budget, also potential health threatening. However our analysis is not flawless due to partial loss of information connected with locations, can be effectively used as specific method for determining of spatial outliers. Simplified approach shown in this paper uses values derived from gridded population density as downs calling factor for air pollutants' emissions. We determined three potential regions that should be treated separately to obtain independent – ‘regional” emission surrogates.

Autocorrelation occurrence in measurement results of regularly sampled sound levels in environmental noise risk assessment

Abstract: The determination of the uncertainty of measurement is a necessity of each control procedure. According to the limitations of the method of uncertainty of measurement determination; (recommended in the Guide of the Central Office of Measurements prepared under auspices of the International Bureau of Measurements); the necessity of analysis of time links of instantaneous sound level LAi values, which are used for calculations of the controlled noise indicators, occurred. The authors considered the problem of an autocorrelation occurrence in measurement results of the regularly sampled sound levels. The indispensable identification of the autocorrelation function for the controlled variability in the calendar year of equivalent sound levels L Di, L Wi, L Ni, I = 1,2,. .,365 – was presented. The necessary correction of the up to now solutions of uncertainty assessments - by determining the effective number of uncorrelated control observations n eff, depended on the autocorrelation function – was indicated. These considerations were supplemented by the numerical example illustrating possible differences in uncertainty assessments in the estimation of the controlled noise indicators values.

Analysis of influence of clevises on functioning of friction joint

Abstract: The paper presents the results of research on influence of clevises and their yokes on functioning of friction joint used in mining housing of corridor excavation. Apart from the construction joint, the main role of the clevis in friction joint is ensuring sufficient downforce among working profiles, which is related with the necessity of ensuring axial load in threaded joints. For this reason there was performed research on whole clevises and their yokes concentrated on determining the value of the load, at which they get permanently deformed. These deformations are the main reason for non-axial load of threaded joint. The research was done on the most commonly used constructions of clevises and the reinforced version of SDO29 clevis. The results prove that the clevises have crucial impact on functioning of friction joints and safety of work of the housing.

It may be solved through process automation by means of tools created in spreadsheets. An example of such a tool, deployed for the purpose of automation of a process implemented for generation of EDI messages in an ERP class system, has been described in the article. What has also been discussed is the course of a process performed by a man as well as basic components of the tool proposed. The article also provides a comparison of duration times required to complete the process under different variants, both before and after the implementation of the tool created.

Process map as an innovative tool of quality optimisation of the production process

Abstract: Process mapping is of significant importance in quality management as it allows us to precisely analyse the processes going on in the organisation and, based on it, conduct an analysis of the critical points in the production process using selected quality management tools or methods. Organisations constantly search for new, innovative solutions and methods which can be used to increase their efficiency and product quality. An important measure taken by today's companies is the identification of causes of the defects recorded in the production process, and analysis of returns from external clients. This makes it possible to reduce production costs and increase the company's reliability in the eyes of the client. However, to achieve it, the company first needs to map the process. The article presents improving the production process of a vibrating screen manufactured by a company which produces machinery and equipment for the mining industry, using a process map. The analysis conducted made it possible to propose corrections and changes to the production process, which increased the efficiency of the analysed product.

Example of use of quality tools in the improvement of maintenance process

Abstract: The article presents the results of observational studies conducted in one of Silesian production companies. The research was aimed at improving the maintenance process and focused on the analysis of utilization of working time by the employees. The measurements were taken for three randomly chosen persons. The most important actions performed by the employees were identified and assigned to effective time – spent on everyday duties connected with maintaining the functionality of technical equipment, auxiliary time – dedicated to preparatory and administrative activities, and ineffective time, during which the employees performed actions not connected with their work. Among the ineffective and auxiliary actions those which took the longest were separated. In order to reduce their duration, the 5-Why method was used. It allowed us to identify the causes responsible for the overly long duration of auxiliary actions. As a result of the analysis conducted, corrective measures were proposed aimed at reducing the duration of those actions along with a system for their assessment, which should lead to an improvement in the efficiency of maintenance department employees.
