vol. 7, iss. 3/2 Jerzy WOJEWÓDKA, Julia GIŻEWSKA ”The second life” – how does form determine functions Abstract: Using the natural skills of interpretation and reinterpretation, we are able to give "the second life" to items, architectural objects and phenomena. When creating it, we do not always have to design new forms that have never been known to anyone. Definitions, names, functions can be only a starting point for the further creation process. This way of thinking teaches and develops – humility and imagination. Our article is an attempt to answer several questions related to the above train of thought: Is the once given definition, the only proper one ? Is it worth trying to ”look at something differently” ? What are the consequences of creating ”the second life” ? What is the role of beauty and how to care for it ? And finally – where art and technology are connecting in this process. Can the technique be perceived as an art itself ? Our thoughts have been illustrated with several examples from various fields of artistic activity. The review of the works will allow to find answers not unequivocal, but the ones giving an opportunity for individual thoughts and conclusions about the relationship between art and technology. vol. 7, iss. 3/5 Katarzyna DYBAŁA, Jerzy WOJEWÓDKA Early baroque art in the language of contemporary technology – comparative analysis: Villa Giulia versus the student design Abstract: The paper seeks to answer the question about the relationship between art and modern technology. The main assumption is to investigate the influence of technological advancements on artistic expression. A clear designer’s vision realized without contemporary construction solutions is exemplified by Villa Giulia, an early Baroque residence by G. B. da Vignola. The student design, ‘A Country House’, represents a single-family home based on modern solutions. The buildings enable comparing their features while differentiating two categories. The first category follows the contrast design principle of element arrangement and functional zoning. The latter focuses on the specific arrangement of elements and its impression effect. This includes the concept of depth and the modest exterior hiding a rich interior. The research method consists in the simplification of projections and cross-sections of these houses. Thus, it is possible to indicate distinct common features and apparent conceptual analogy between Vignola’s intent and the student vision. The conclusion is that art is meant to formulate an objective and technology should make it real in a genuine dimension. It may be observed that contemporary solutions enhance universality and adjustment of the idea of the master of Baroque architecture to the realities of the 21century man. Digital tools in the processes of shaping ceramics items – 3D printing Abstract: Ceramics has always played an important role in human life. In the last several dozen years it has become an excellent material raising the value of raw materials and materials used in distant industries. Aside from a numerous group of ceramic materials used in artistic ceramics, newer materials appear, with improved strength parameters, used in engineering ceramics. The information about the use of ceramic coatings in turbine engines or worn textile products is no longer surprising. Such a large expansion of ceramics would not have been possible if modern, innovative technologies had not appeared. The essence of progress is the change in thinking about creation and its application. Contemporary researchers, scientists, artists, and designers focus on these problems. Undoubtedly, in the near future, the digital language will almost completely supplant the analogue transmission. And the awareness of the imminent arrival of something new should be an argument that convinces contemporary artists to gradually introduce themselves in advanced technology. vol. 7, iss. 3/7 Maciej KASPERSKI Technology as a fetish Abstract: Our civilization is characterized by the fascination with technological achievements, all kinds of novelties that have their source in scientific discoveries or the effects of research carried out. Technological progress has certainly influenced the evolution of our behavior. It makes life easier, it inspires us, but at the same time, it evokes a sense of technology dominance. Already in the nineteenth century, the American poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau stated: "Man has become the tool of his tools." Thoreau draws our attention to the question of submission, dependence in the context of what man created. Is man always able to control the object ? Can an object dominate a person? This seemingly naive question touches the issue of fascination with the subject in the context of its value, context, usefulness or type of technology used. In the ancient beliefs of indigenous tribal cultures, especially before the development of organized religious systems, all non-human beings possessed a soul including objects. Objects, parts of machines and devices often become modern totems, to which worship is given. Surrounded by an irrational cult, they become modern fetishes endowed with magical power whose source is mysterious or not fully understood. In the text, i undertake issues from the borderline between art and technology, where nuances, dependencies and mutual relations between them are most visible. Moments in which a specific energy exchange takes place between the subject and the user, between the object and the observer. This relationship has also become important in many of my projects, whether through a specific object or activity but also technique and method of implementation. In the second part, I present selected realizations of contemporaryartists: designers or artists in which the technological context as well as the relationship with the subject, determine the direction of their actions or inspiration. vol. 7, iss. 3/15 Aleksander KRÓL Hidden but incredible – road tunnels Abstract: Tunnels are the objects which in general have only practical features. As far as other objects made by engineers such as viaducts or buildings aside from functional properties have aesthetic values too, the tunnels are located at the opposite end. What is more, it can be revealed that every tunnel is somewhat in contrary to the concept of object: it is just a hole, an empty space under the Earth surface. However, despite such extremely usable characteristic some more abstract ideas can be associated to the tunnels. The paper discusses the importance of tunnels for modern society, some historical facts are mentioned and the most severe dangers connected with tunnels usage are pointed out. vol. 7, iss. 3/17 Marzena OGÓREK, Zbigniew SKUZA, Tadeusz FRACZEK Characteristics of ion nitriding with the active screen of non-nitriding metallic materials Abstract: In the article for a selected group of non-nitrite materials (austenitic steels: X5CrNi18-10, X2CrNiMo17-12-2, technical titanium Ti99.2, titanium alloy Ti6Al4V), the properties of the surface layers (nitrogen diffusion depth, hardness, abrasiveness) obtained as a result of the nitriding process were compared an ionic sample placed directly on the cathode and a sample placed on the cathode using the active screen. The obtained results clearly indicate that in this case the "active screen" method is more effective. The attractiveness of this innovative method can be additionally demonstrated by the fact that implementing it to industrial conditions is a simple almost cost-free operation (costs associated with the creation of an active screen). The most important for the proper functioning of the organization is its proper management, that is "a summary of activities directed to the resources of the organization and performed with the intention of achieving the organization's goals in an efficient and effective manner". The most important influence on the behavior of people has the organizational culture adopted in each organization. Among the recognized definitions, it is a collection of common beliefs, values, rituals, stories, myths, specific language, supporting the sense of community among the members of the organization. Organizational culture indicates how members form a mutual relationship within the team and how they relate to the good or the common goal. It attempts to present possibilities that company can benefit from by gathering and using knowledge to manage company's operational activity effectively. The purpose of the article is to show relation between the application of the operational controlling tools in the company and results achieved by current operations. Tests conducted in the company introducing operational controlling in its operations allowed to confirm hypothesis that the application of the operational controlling system has a direct impact on results of operational growth of an entity. Indicated relation was observed in eight out of nine analysed company's branches. Testing dependencies was conducted as a comparison of operational financial performance of each branch, both before and after introducing of the operational controlling system.
